Can a grid reinforced concrete deck handle deck overhangs and barrier loads?

Yes, but with possible limitations. In accordance with Section 13 of the AASHTO LRFD code the yield line failure shall not extend into the deck. Therefore, the deck must be stronger than the railing system. In particular, the deck should have a moment resistance at least equal to the sum of the moment of resistance of the parapet at its base and the dead load moments. This means that the strength of the barrier selected must be compared with the strength of the deck at the design overhang. Calculations can be performed for various barrier alternatives (concrete, post and rail, etc).
